Mile Five Nkwen Residents Decry Rising Criminal Activities

On Sunday, August 16, a group of young men reportedly invaded the neighbourhood. The incident left residents frightened and concerned about their safety. The men reportedly arrived on a motorbike and allegedly posed as Ambazonia freedom fighters. One victim said he was watching a football match when he stepped out to ease himself. Unknown to him, the men were reportedly waiting nearby for a target. They quickly approached him and demanded his phone. “I initially refused and tried to resist, but they pulled out a long knife,” the victim recounted. Under threat, he handed over his phone. The men then searched his pockets for more valuables. However, he managed to wrestle his way free and ran back into the drinking spot. He had been there watching the football match before stepping outside. Meanwhile, other residents reportedly lost money and valuables to the same group that night. The latest incidents have renewed concerns over security in Mile Five Nkwen and other parts of Bamenda. Residents say the attacks show that criminal gangs are exploiting growing insecurity in the area. They are calling for greater community vigilance and collective action. For many residents, the message is clear. No neighbourhood in Bamenda can afford to lower its guard as insecurity continues to resurface.
