Cameroon Faces Significant HIV Burden with 510,000 Affected Individuals

HIV Burden in Cameroon
Cameroon has been identified as having a significant HIV burden, ranking 16th globally according to the World Population Review. Currently, around 510,000 individuals in the country are living with HIV, highlighting a critical public health issue that continues to affect many lives. This ranking underscores the ongoing challenges faced by the healthcare system in managing and addressing the epidemic effectively.
The prevalence rates are particularly alarming in urban centers, with Yaoundé reporting a rate of 4.4% and Douala at 3.3%. These figures indicate that the urban population is disproportionately affected by HIV, necessitating targeted interventions in these areas to reduce transmission and improve health outcomes.
National Awareness Campaign Initiatives
In response to the HIV crisis, Cameroon has launched the 'Vacances sans SIDA 2026' campaign, which aims to raise awareness and promote testing among the population. The campaign was officially launched on July 22, 2026, and is designed to reach 9 million people across the country. This initiative reflects the government's commitment to combating the HIV epidemic through education and outreach.
The campaign focuses on increasing public knowledge about HIV transmission and prevention methods, as well as encouraging individuals to get tested. By targeting a large segment of the population, the initiative aims to reduce stigma and promote healthier behaviors, which are crucial in managing the epidemic effectively.
