Ongoing Strike in Cameroonian Universities Amidst Unresolved Issues
The strike by the Syndicat national des enseignants du supérieur (Synes) continues in eleven state universities in Cameroon, despite recent government concessions. The strike, which began in early September, is fueled by unresolved salary issues and a significant debt owed to educators. Minister Jacques Fame Ndongo has expressed willingness to negotiate, but the situation remains tense.

Context of the Strike
The strike initiated by the Syndicat national des enseignants du supérieur (Synes) began in early September 2023, affecting eleven state universities across Cameroon. Educators are demanding the payment of long-overdue salaries and allowances, particularly an allocation for research modernization. The situation escalated after a failed meeting on September 11, where the government and union representatives could not reach an agreement, leading to the continuation of the strike.
The financial crisis in the education sector is deep-rooted, with a reported debt of 10 billion FCFA owed to educators over the past twenty years. Despite the government's announcement of a 41% payment of this debt, the Synes has maintained its position, stating that such measures are insufficient to resolve the ongoing issues. The strike has led to significant disruptions in academic activities, with universities operating at reduced capacity.
Government's Response and Negotiations
In response to the ongoing strike, Minister Jacques Fame Ndongo has expressed a willingness to engage in dialogue with the Synes. On September 13, he indicated plans to meet with union representatives to discuss their grievances further. However, the Synes has publicly stated that they do not consider the government's recent actions as sufficient to warrant ending the strike, emphasizing the need for concrete solutions.
Additionally, on September 23, Minister Ndongo met with the Synapauc, the union representing support staff in universities, to address their demands for salary adjustments and overdue payments. This meeting is part of the government's broader strategy to resolve the educational crisis, but the effectiveness of these discussions remains to be seen as the Synes continues to hold firm on its demands.
Public and Political Reactions
The ongoing strike has drawn attention from various political figures and organizations. The Parti camerounais pour la réconciliation nationale (PCRN) has called for urgent government action to address the educators' demands. In a statement, PCRN leader Cabral Libii emphasized the importance of upholding the legal framework that supports higher education in Cameroon, urging the government to prioritize resolving the crisis.
Despite the government's attempts to negotiate, the Synes has publicly refuted claims of any resolution, asserting that the strike will continue until their demands are fully met. This ongoing tension highlights the broader issues within the educational system in Cameroon, where financial constraints and unresolved grievances have led to a significant crisis affecting both educators and students.
