Struggles of the Kribi-Lolabé Highway Amid Financial Challenges
The Kribi-Lolabé highway, a significant infrastructure project in Cameroon, is facing economic difficulties despite a substantial investment of 250 billion FCFA. The toll revenue remains low, leading to increased financial obligations for the government towards the managing company, Kribi Highway Management (KHM).
Economic Context of the Highway
The Kribi-Lolabé highway, a crucial infrastructure aimed at enhancing port accessibility in Cameroon, has seen an investment of 250 billion FCFA. However, its economic model is faltering, as reported by L’Économie. The highway is managed by Kribi Highway Management (KHM), a subsidiary of China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC), which has raised concerns about its profitability and sustainability.
Despite the significant investment, the highway's toll revenue has not met expectations, leading to questions about its viability. The low traffic volume on the road has compounded these issues, making it difficult for KHM to recover its costs and for the government to fulfill its financial commitments.
Rising Financial Obligations
The financial burden on the Cameroonian government has increased, with repayments to KHM rising by 26.6 billion FCFA over the past year. This spike in repayment obligations comes at a time when the highway's traffic remains disappointingly low, further straining the government's finances.
The situation raises concerns about the long-term sustainability of the highway project. As the government struggles to meet its financial commitments, there are fears that the lack of profitability could lead to further complications in the management of the highway and its operational viability.
